Janice Sylvester, LPC, LMFT

Licensed Professional Counselor

Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist

I was twenty-two years old, living in Texas, working for a doctor when I received a call from my mother who informed me that she had received mail for me from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. I asked her to forward it to me and so she did. It was a packet from the graduate program in Rehabilitation Counseling. The funny thing was, I had not inquired about any graduate programs. I filled out the packet with little hope that I would be accepted. I was, however, accepted and have embarked on an adventure that has lasted for the past thirty years. I am often asked, “How did you choose your profession?” It is with great humility that I always respond, “It chose me.”

I began my career working with chronically mentally ill adults in a group home setting with the goal of assisting them to gain independence and become a viable part of society. I worked with many individuals from all walks of life; nurses, social workers, a geologist, and so on. It was then I recognized how magnificent but yet fragile the mind is. I later became one of the pioneers in the mental health system that worked with mentally ill adults and children within their own environments which included home, school, and community based services. I have served as Program director for a therapeutic foster care and juvenile delinquent programs which served severely emotionally disturbed children and adolescents. I am currently the Program Director for the Intensive Case Management Program and also serve as Crisis Care Coordinator for the seven parishes within Region 4.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and Licensed Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. I am also a Certified Psychiatric Rehabilitation Practitioner and a National Certified Counselor. I am trained in Homebuilders, Multi-Systemic Therapy, the Nurturing Parents Program for families in Substance Abuse and Recovery and certified in Child/Parent Psychotherapy. As part of my professional growth, I am seeking certification in Parent/Child Interaction Therapy and Youth Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. (PTSD CBT)

I have been in the mental health field for twenty-eight years and continue to learn new and innovative techniques to better serve the clients I work with. My professional goal is to assist each individual in reaching their highest potential and to be the best individual they can be.
